A Guide to Choosing the Right Vitamins & Supplements

You know nutrition is important, especially as you get older. But how do you choose the right vitamins and supplements? This guide is for you.

Did you know that over 70% of seniors take at least one dietary supplement daily?

Vitamins and supplements are concentrated sources of nutrients designed to support your health when your diet may fall short. Think of them as a helping hand, not a replacement for real food.

While fresh vegetables, fruits, and other whole foods remain the best sources of daily nutrients, sometimes, life gets in the way. That’s where supplements come in handy, acting as a safety net to help you meet your nutritional needs.

Naturally, the body absorbs nutrients less efficiently with age, and dietary restrictions or health conditions can make it harder to meet your nutritional quota, too. Supplements help bridge those gaps, giving your body the support it needs, whether for stronger bones or a more robust immune system.

Here’s some advice to help you choose the right ones.

What are the Best Vitamins and Supplements for Seniors?

Look at the shelves of any pharmacy, and you’ll likely feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. Supplements come in all shapes and sizes, from powders to capsules to gummies. They can fall under many categories, too, like multivitamins, probiotics, and herbal blends.

For seniors, certain nutrients often stand out. Vitamin D is a must for bone health and for fighting fatigue. Calcium is another go-to for preventing osteoporosis and dental problems. Omega-3 fatty acids support heart health, while B vitamins help maintain energy levels and proper brain function. How to Choose Supplements Effectively Building a Routine to Boost Long-Term Health

But here’s the thing—more isn’t always better. Too much of a good thing can lead to unwanted side effects.

High doses of certain vitamins, such as A or E, may even be harmful. You need to make sure you choose high-quality supplements with the right dosages. Labels that mention third-party testing, such as USP or NSF certifications, are a good indication that you’re dealing with a trustworthy product.

How to Choose Supplements Effectively

Step one? Talk to your doctor—or dietitian! They can assess your health needs and recommend supplements tailored to your unique situation. Whether it’s addressing low vitamin D levels or finding the perfect multivitamin blend, having a professional opinion eliminates the guesswork.

You can also do some research of your own. Brands offering transparency about ingredient sourcing or third-party testing deserve your trust. Quality matters when it comes to your health, so put your money into something reliable. Look for reviews and use online databases that rank supplement brands for quality and safety.

Be careful about overdoing it. A common myth is that “more is better” when it comes to vitamins, but “too much of a good thing” is true here. If you overdose on specific nutrients, you could suffer from adverse effects ranging from minor stomach upset to serious liver damage. Always stick to the recommended dosage and ask your doctor if you have more questions.

Building a Routine to Boost Long-Term Health

Make supplements part of your daily routine by taking them with meals or keeping them in a visible spot as a reminder. By following the dosage instructions and keeping a regular schedule, you can reap the full benefits and start living a healthier, more energetic life.

But don’t overlook the basics – a balanced diet is still the foundation of good health. Create meals packed with lean proteins, colorful veggies, and whole grains, and use supplements as an added boost rather than a primary source.

I have visited Brentwood many times. Every time that I am there I am amazed at the level of care that I see the residents receive from all the staff. I see the staff talking to the residents and calling them by name and taking the time to chat with them. This might seem like a minor thing but I can tell you, it doesn't happen at a lot of other places. They always have activities planed and there is always a happy group of people participating. Great job Jennifer Kedik and the entire staff.

I went in with a family member for a tour, to look for an apartment for another family member. I could not believe how nice and kind the staff were to eachother, and kind when overheard talking to the residents. The rooms were clean , and the building was well kept, We will definitely be back to Brentwood at Niles!

I just left from visiting my Mother who is a resident in Brentwood's Memory Care @Niles . I have to say ,I was happy overall before, but since Brentwood has been under new owners, I can tell that it's even better. My siblings and I agree . Everything is clean, the staff are very helpful and so sweet to my Mom and just feels more organized and the staff look happy. I have been a nurse for 32 years so my expectations are high and I feel that my Mom is receiving the best care she deserves. I know no place is perfect but feel reassured and confident @this point .

We are so impressed with the fabulous care my dad is getting at Brentwood in Niles. The staff are all saints! They are so helpful and sweet! My dad moved in last weekend, Sept. 3, and is very happy and comfortable in his new facility. We could not have asked for a better place. I'm 2 1/2 hours away and my brothers are both 1 1/2 hour away. We feel so much at ease knowing that he is in excellent care. Keep up the fantastic work staff! Give each other a HUGE pat on the back and say "a job well done!"

My husband and I toured this very nice facility yesterday with Jennifer Kedik, who couldn't have been more accommodating and helpful. We are looking for a place for my mom. If it comes to the point where her live-in caregiver can no longer stay with her, I would love to have Mom go to Brentwood. It's clean and light, the food looked delicious and all of the staff was friendly. Residents seemed happy and well cared for. We were impressed!
