I have the distinct honor of proclaiming March 3, 2026 ”BETTY ZELLERS DAY” in the City of Niles!
Betty Zellers was born on March 3, 1921, in Indianapolis, Indiana and graduated from LaPorte schools. She had four brothers, three served during World War II and one in the Korean War; Betty bought and encouraged co-workers to buy bonds to support the wars; and
In 1943, Betty married Williams Zellers and they moved to Roseland, Indiana. In 1950, they moved to Niles where they founded Niles Engineering and Betty was the secretary/bookkeeper until 1988 when they sold the company and retired. Daughter, Michele Boyd, attended Westside Elementary; Betty became involved in the PTO, dance school activities, and chaperoned events. Betty was an Eastern Star member while her daughter was in Rainbow Girls. She served as a volunteer at the Hospital Coffee Bar and later in the surgery waiting room until she was in her late 90s, and delivered Meals on Wheels until she was 98; and
In 1953, Betty joined the First Presbyterian church and served as a bible schoolteacher, deacon, and volunteered for many church activities; and
Betty was an avid bowler, being honored as the eldest Niles female bowler at one time, and golfed on leagues at Brookwood, Hampshire, and Plym Park before retiring from golf in 2013.
Betty was always there for everyone, family, friends, extended family, full of determination, encouragement, and strength. If approached for help, she would simply reply "Let’s get it done”! ... See MoreSee Less
