Stay Cool, Stay Well: Smart Habits for Safer, Easier Living

Jul 2, 2026 | Assisted Living, Featured

Summer has a way of inviting us to slow down, take a deep breath, and just take things in. The sunlight lingers a little longer, the air feels softer in the mornings, and there’s a natural rhythm to the season that encourages connection, whether that’s time spent outdoors or simply sharing a quiet moment with someone you care about.

For residents in assisted living, summer holds all of those same possibilities. But it also asks us to be a little more intentional.

To help our residents stay comfortable in the heat, the team at Priority Life Care creates an environment where they can continue to feel their best, day after day. We believe that summer should be something to enjoy, not something to work around.

Finding a Comfortable Daily Rhythm

One of the simplest ways to stay safe during the summer months is by gently adjusting the rhythm of the day. Mornings often offer cooler temperatures and a sense of calm, making them ideal for walks, light movement, or time spent outdoors. There’s something especially refreshing about stepping outside early in the day, before the heat settles in, and enjoying that quiet energy.

As the afternoon approaches, the focus naturally shifts. This is a time for rest, hydration, and indoor activities that feel comfortable and unhurried.

These small adjustments help prevent overheating without taking away from the joy of the season. And they matter; according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults over 65 are at a higher risk for heat-related illnesses, in part because the body becomes less efficient at regulating temperature over time.

Hydration as a Gentle Routine

Taken at face value, “staying hydrated” is a chore that sounds simple but is often overlooked, especially on busy days when the schedule is jam-packed and sipping water is an afterthought. That’s a problem, since dehydration is one of the most common health concerns for older adults and is an issue that’s amplified in warmer weather.

Many older adults don’t feel thirsty as frequently, even when their bodies need fluids. That’s why hydration works best when it becomes part of a routine rather than something reactive.

For us at Priority Life Care, this often looks like small, consistent moments throughout the day, offering water alongside meals, enjoying a favorite beverage during social time, or incorporating foods with high water content like fruit.

Staying Active Without Overdoing It

Movement remains an important part of wellbeing, even in the summer, but the approach needs to shift.

Instead of longer or more strenuous activity, the focus should be on gentle, consistent movement. A short walk in a shaded area, light stretching, or even a seated activity can help residents stay engaged without adding stress to the body.

Here, the goal is continuity, not intensity, keeping that sense of movement and independence intact, while respecting the limits of the season.

Creating Spaces That Feel Cool and Calm

Sometimes, comfort comes down to the environment itself.

Small changes, like adjusting window coverings, using lighter fabrics, or ensuring good airflow, can make a space feel noticeably more comfortable. These details may seem minor, but together, they create an atmosphere where residents can relax without feeling the weight of the heat.

Even the emotional tone of a space matters. Calm, welcoming environments naturally support a sense of ease, which becomes especially important during warmer months.

A Season to Enjoy, Together

At its heart, summer is still about connection. It’s about sitting together in the morning light, sharing a meal, or simply enjoying the presence of others. These moments don’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful, just comfortable.

At Priority Life Care, we’re committed to creating spaces where those moments can happen naturally, no matter the season.

If you’d like to learn more about how our assisted living communities support residents throughout the summer months and beyond, we invite you to reach out. We’re here to help you feel confident, supported, and at ease every step of the way.

At Brentwood Niles Senior Living, summer wellness goes hand in hand with enjoying the best of southwest Michigan. Residents can spend time exploring Riverfront Park or Fernwood Botanical Garden during cooler hours while remaining close to trusted healthcare services at Corewell Health Lakeland Niles. Downtown Niles shopping and local dining destinations provide comfortable options for socializing indoors when temperatures climb. Community traditions like the Hunter Ice Festival and year-round Riverwalk attractions help residents stay connected to local life.

I have visited Brentwood many times. Every time that I am there I am amazed at the level of care that I see the residents receive from all the staff. I see the staff talking to the residents and calling them by name and taking the time to chat with them. This might seem like a minor thing but I can tell you, it doesn't happen at a lot of other places. They always have activities planed and there is always a happy group of people participating. Great job Jennifer Kedik and the entire staff.

I just left from visiting my Mother who is a resident in Brentwood's Memory Care @Niles . I have to say ,I was happy overall before, but since Brentwood has been under new owners, I can tell that it's even better. My siblings and I agree . Everything is clean, the staff are very helpful and so sweet to my Mom and just feels more organized and the staff look happy. I have been a nurse for 32 years so my expectations are high and I feel that my Mom is receiving the best care she deserves. I know no place is perfect but feel reassured and confident @this point .

We are so impressed with the fabulous care my dad is getting at Brentwood in Niles. The staff are all saints! They are so helpful and sweet! My dad moved in last weekend, Sept. 3, and is very happy and comfortable in his new facility. We could not have asked for a better place. I'm 2 1/2 hours away and my brothers are both 1 1/2 hour away. We feel so much at ease knowing that he is in excellent care. Keep up the fantastic work staff! Give each other a HUGE pat on the back and say "a job well done!"

My husband and I toured this very nice facility yesterday with Jennifer Kedik, who couldn't have been more accommodating and helpful. We are looking for a place for my mom. If it comes to the point where her live-in caregiver can no longer stay with her, I would love to have Mom go to Brentwood. It's clean and light, the food looked delicious and all of the staff was friendly. Residents seemed happy and well cared for. We were impressed!
